Discussions about the need for a children’s museum in Northwest Arkansas began in the early 2000s. The museum received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2006, and fundraising for the project ensued and continues to this day.

With the support of the Lee Scott family, the Walmart Foundation and other major contributors, the museum opened its doors in July of 2015. It was originally thought that 160,000 would pass through its doors that first year, but there were actually more than 311,000. The one million mark has long since passed.
